Jeanne’s dead, Oscar has disappeared, Captain Belmont and his men are MIA and thus The Becoming Book 1 comes to an end.
If you read these posts then you are most likely already aware that we’re going back and doing some revisions to create a “final cut” of Book 1 that will greatly benefit from what we’ve learned over the course of these nearly 200 pages.
The biggest issue with Book I, I think, (and one of the reasons why it feels incomplete right now) is that I didn’t put the focus where it belonged and let myself go off on some tangents that either I shouldn’t have or that could have been placed in the narrative better. The upcoming “final cut” is basically a streamlined version of events, putting the focus exactly where it belongs: Jeanne and Oscar.
And you’re going to get answers to some pretty big lingering questions – and I mean right away with the first batch of new pages being produced. Want to know what infection is? Part one of that is coming in the revision. Part two is coming a bit later in the next arc (starting May 1st!) – but it’s on the way. Want to know more about the church and it’s importance? It’s coming. Oscar’s dad? He’ll be popping up REAL soon too. Who is St. George? Well…okay, that one isn’t coming anytime soon, at least not in real-time, but expect quite a few blanks to be filled in and most importantly, a much more enjoyable reading experience.
Now before anyone gets worried that it’s a massive rewrite – it’s not. I’m just adding some details and a few scenes here and there where I feel they’re needed. There will be some re-ordering of events and some scenes are being cut and in at least one case, a character is being introduced a bit differently, but if you’ve read these last 190+ pages, you still have the gist of it all. However, I strongly suggest you read the final cut when it’s available.
So, WHEN will it be available? Well, that’s what DK is working on right now. We’re going to release pages in batches (1 full scene per batch) and I expect the next to appear around May – and it’s a big one, at least in story terms.
But don’t worry, none of that means we’re putting the comic on pause or anything. Well, we kind of are in April, but come May 1st , we’re moving right into the next arc – spinning out directly from the events of Book 1!
I should probably also repeat here that starting on May 1st that not only will I (J) be the regular artist on the series, but the entire months pages will be uploaded on the 1st of each month with the intent being 1 full scene per month.
This works out great for you and me since you’ll be able to leave the site feeling you got more than a forgettable story snippet and because scenes are of varying lengths, I’ll have bouts where I can take a bit of a breather when a months’ update doesn’t call for a lot of pages – although, I’ll try to keep the minimum at 3.
We’ll also be debuting a new landing page so that when you visit the site, you’re not greeted by the last page of the month’s update so as not to spoil anything. More on this can be read HERE.
And finally, we may be the last webcomic to do so, but we’re now on PATREON as well! Don’t know what the hell that is? Check out the video HERE, or skim over our brief explanation on our own page HERE.
At the moment we have two tiers of “perks” for those who wish to support the comic:
Tier 1 (BDL Initiate) gives supporters access to a behind the scenes content stream including sketches, unused art, and basically just whatever is cool that we think you might like. Suggestions welcome!
Tier 2 (Disciples Apprentice) gives supporters access to that same behind the scenes stream but with a couple major differences: (1st) they’re automatically entered into semi-regular original art giveaways and (2nd) access to new pages of The Ne’er-Do-Wells, our spin-off series, AND pages of The Becoming Book 1 revisions* as they’re completed.
*It should probably be noted that the revision pages WILL be uploaded on the main site once full scenes have been completed as previously mentioned, they are not exclusive to the Patreon supporter stream.
And of course, both tiers include our complete gratitude and thanks for helping to support our comic.
Okay, there was a lot to cover today, and I may have overlooked some things, so if you have any questions please post them here.
